Sumba, however, is not for everyone. Neither the food nor accommodations are up to international standards. But if we are willing to make a little effort we can see an authentic, ancient culture with none of the layers of Hinduism or Islam mostly found elsewhere in the country.

Itinerary

Day 1Tambaloka Airport - Mananga Aba Beach - Ratenggaro Village

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be picked up and welcomed by us. The first activity on the Island will be to Mananga Aba Beach.
Afterward, we will continue our journey and we will visit Ratenggaro Village. With its superb coastal location and reasonably good road infrastructure, Ratenggaro is one of the more commonly visited villages in Sumba. However don’t that let put you off, as it’s rather spectacular, and there was still not another tourist in sight when we stopped by.
You will overnight at hotel near Tambaloka in East Sumba for getting rest. Lunch and dinner provided at Local Restaurant.

Day 2Mandorak Beach - Weekuri Lagoon - Mareha Bay - Mbawana Beach

After waking up and getting ready for a new day of exploring, you will be picked up at your hotel and we will be heading to Mandorak Beach. The beach will provide a great and peaceful stay with nice spots. The big opening between two rock ridges will let the clear blue water pass through the beach and also let you look far into the ocean. When you are there, you can also take the higher ground which will give a view of the coastline and the rocky cliffs where you can watch the sunset.
After the Beach, we will bring you to Weekuri Lake. This lake is a salt water lake at the south-west of Sumba. You can take a dive to experience the blue and clear water of Weekuri and also for a possible cooling down.
After this, we will continue our journey and we will explore Bwanna beach. Before you arrive there, you have to drive on a sandy road which guides you through a massive field of high grass, which gives a very adventurous feeling. First we will stop at the viewing point where you can view on Watu Maladong and Bwanna Beach.

Lunch and dinner provided at Local Restaurant.

Day 3Lapopu Waterfall - Praijing Village - Warinding Hill

A new day, a new adventure. Today the journey will begin at the village of Praijing which is located just a few minutes west from Waikabubak. There are two villages at this place but they are built so close to each other that it will look like one big village. The village will give you a welcoming feeling while you look around. Next on our adventure will be the La popu Waterfall. After a drive through the endless hilly and green landscape of Sumba, you will arrive nearby the waterfall.
To visit the waterfall, you will need to do a small hike of approximately 15 minutes and cross a bamboo bridge to get there. There is a nice spot to sit down where you can watch the water find its way down the hill. You can also bring your swimming clothes to take a dive in the water just in front of the big waterfall and cool down after a long day of adventure.

Day 4Tanggedu Waterfall - Purukambera Savanna - Walakiri Beach

Next on our adventure will be the Tanggedu Waterfall. After a drive through the endless hilly and green landscape of Sumba, you will arrive nearby the waterfall. Tanggedu Waterfall is called Grand Canyon of East Sumba or Twin Canyon in East Sumba. Why is that? Because of the rock cliffs and the water flow is so stunning. People say that this is similar to Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States of America (USA).

Afterward, we drive to Savana Punukumbara. Located 24 km from Waingapu, lies Puru Kambera savannah that is a habitat for many creatures of Sumba. Looking past through the savannah, you will see nothing but the clear blue ocean calling you to draw closer. Although the weather was hot, I was enticed to explore the outdoor on my own feet. As we got off the car, I find myself wanting to take another step further from the car as I was so enticed by the magnificent beauty of Puru Kambera that is truly Sumba.

The next stop is at Walakiri beach. We will be watching the sunset here while exploring the beach with its beautiful mangroves. Don’t hesitate and walk towards the small and magical trees which are growing inside the water. When the sun has disappeared, we will go back to the hotel where you can take a rest. The final destination of today will be Waingapu the capital city of East-Sumba. Here you can take a rest at your hotel.

Day 5Tanarara Hill - Ikat Tenun & Craft Center - Waingapu Airport

The last day of this trip is here. So before you go to the airport, we want to show you one more spot which you will be visiting before you leave the Island. The Tanarara Hill, the hills where you can stand on one of the highest points and have a look at the landscape which Sumba has to offer. You can see the lands with agriculture from above here and is very close to the airport. Unfortunately this trip also has an end. The driver will escort you to Tenun Ikat & Craft Center before drive to catch the flight to the next destination.
